A Fairy’s Tale
By J.C. Van De Wall

Within the Laflorean wood there is a tiny kingdom, a kingdom of fairies. When visiting this land you must be careful not to step on anything for it’s easily destroyed. However my story begins with Rose. A very curious fairy, who should of just stayed at home.

“No Rose you can not leave the kingdom?”

“But your majesty, oh king Oberon, I must,”

“Rose you know the laws of this kingdom, if you leave you could be sentence for banishment!” Exclaimed the king

“But your majesty”

“No Rose, now go home.”

But Rose didn’t listen to the king. She decided not to go home. But instead left the world she new in search of another one. Rose had been flying for several hours before she came across a small yard. There was a beautiful white archway with flowering Roses covering it. The yard was full of flowers ranging form daffodils, daisies, blue bells, and lilies. In the center was a beautiful bird bath with a metal fairy figurine sitting near the surface of the water. Rose went to investigate and decided to pose like the small fairy, sitting beside it.

“Well I think that I look way cuter than that ratty old thing.”

Then Rose noticed a small house on the opposite side of the arc. It was a small, yellow building; with beautiful stain glass work lade into the center of each window. This of course interested Rose, so she decided to take a look. When she peered though the window what she saw amazed her. The room was full of objects that were strange to her.

A table and chairs sat in the middle of the room, which of course she recognized, but the other things were foreign to her. So in an act of curiosity she decided to go have a look. When she got inside she looked around, a large white box lay standing on one end with a silver handle on the left side if it. But the things that interested her the most were on the table. So she fluttered over and landed on the table to look at what she had discovered. A large white jar lay on the table with a stick sticking out of it; she opened the lid and stared at it.

“What is this stuff, it looks very sticky.”
She stuck her finger in to taste and to her surprise she found the substance extremely sweet.

“Why this is honey, I look s different somehow, the stuff we get form the bees isn’t this sticky or this color.”

Then she walked over to the other objects of interest, these were clear jars with silver tops, and had holes perforated in them. There was one that had a white substance and the other, a brown speckled substance. So in interest she tipped over the white substance to taste it.

“Oh my! That’s very bitter.” said Rose

So onto the next jar, this time when Rose tipped it over she decided to smell it instead. Much to her dismay the substance tickled her nose and with a very hard sneeze Rose flew off the table and landed on the floor. As Rose went to get up she found herself walking into a glass wall. A little boy had just captured Rose in a jar.

“Oh no! Please, please let me out!” screamed Rose

“Oh boy I caught it, what a weird bug. My friends at school are going to love this.”

“I’m not a bug, I’m a fairy.”

“Ah, I talks too.”

Rose tried to get loose but it was no use, the boy slipped a piece of paper under the jar quickly tipped I over and then slammed a lid on. He then took her over the counter and punched holes in the top so she could breathe. Then carried her to his room and placed her on his dresser.

“You, boy let me out this instant, I don’t belong here!” demanded Rose

“I have a name, it’s Sam.”

“And I’m Rose now let me out, I don’t belong her,” repeated Rose in annoyance.

“Then why were you in my kitchen?”

“I, I wanted to see the items on the table, I’m sorry to of intruded, but if you let me out I’ll never bother you again.” Pleaded Rose

“No,”

“What? But why?”

“I like to have company when my mom’s at work.” Replied Sam

“But…”

“Sam, I’m home”

As soon as Sam heard his mother’s voice he grabbed the jar and ran into the living room caring the jar in arm.

“Mommy look I caught a fairy!” shouted Sam with excitement.

So his mother looked at the jar, but saw nothing inside. But not to discourage her son’s imagination replied with a…

“That’s lovely dear, what a pretty fairy. Now could you help me with the groceries and then wash your hand for supper.”

Then his mother left the living room for the kitchen caring the bags in her arms that she had. Sam looked dismayed and angry at the same time, then looked at Rose and began violently shaking the jar, and yelled at her.

“Why? Why could my mom not see you?”

“Stop doing that, you’ll kill me!”

Sam stopped, put the jar on the entry hall table and glared at her.

“Now what do you mean your mother couldn’t see me?”

“I know she didn’t see you I can tell.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” said Rose plainly.

“I…”

“Sam are you going to get the groceries, or what?”

“Sorry.’

So Sam left Rose on the table to get the groceries. While she was alone with her thoughts, she decided to try and tip the jar, by rocking it back and forth. She had almost succeeded, when Sam’s mom walked into the room, and caught the jar before it fell.

“Oh dear we don’t want glass everywhere, plus I think Sam would get very upset if it broke open.”

After dinner Sam went to his room, his mom had put Rose in there after she had caught it, making sure that it didn’t fall again. But this time when Sam looked at her he had a fowl look on his face.

“Well?” asked Sam in an annoyed tone

“Well what?” replied Rose

“Don’t play dumb with me I invented dumb; tell me why my mom can’t see you?”

“Okay fine I’ll tell you. The reason is that once a child grows up and becomes an adult, they loose there ability to see magic. So therefore your mom can’t see me,” explained Rose

“So what does that mean?”

“That means that she doesn’t believe in me, therefore cannot see me.”

“Then I’ll make her believe!”

“Sam you have to let me go.”

“Why?”

“Because, if you don’t free me then I will die!”

“What?’

“If a fairy is caught and is held in captivity for more that three days they will die on the fourth day of being captive, never to be seen, or heard of again.”

“So that gives me three days to prove to my mom that you’re real!”

“Well actually…”

“Shhh, I’m thinking here.”

“But…”

However it was no use Rose’s voice would not get through to Sam. He was in thinking mode, and nothing would disturb him. Over the next few days Sam tried to prove to his mom that Rose was real. But she’d only say some thing to avoid the topic and send him outside to play or go watch the television. And time was running out for Rose.

“Sam, just let me out, please the sun is setting and…”

“No, I must make her believe.”

So Sam grabbed the jar and marched into the loving room where his mother was reading a book. Sam stomped over to her and shoved the jar in her face.

“Sam I’m reading, please do not put that in my face,” said his mom

“But there is a fairy I’m here and you have to see her.”

So his mom put the book down and looked carefully at the jar. Of course she saw nothing but could here something, and was unsure of what it was.

“Sam…”

It was Rose she had collapsed on the bottom of the jar, she was dieing. Sam quickly opened the jar and pulled her out, laying her out on the palm of his hand looking at her.

“Rose what’s wrong?”

“It’s too late Sam I have no more time left.”

Then Rose took her last breathe, and then was motionless. Sam began to cry, and then his mother had a shocked look on her face. She could see Rose and couldn’t believe her eyes.

“Sam I’m so sorry.”

“What do you mean?” asked Sam in sobs.

“I didn’t believe you before but now I do.”

“You mean you can see her?” asked Sam.

“Yes, yes I can.’

“Well it too lat now, she’s dead.”

More tears ran down Sam face and a few had hit Rose’s body. The more Sam cried the more he splashed her with his tears. Until the both of them heard a noise that came from Rose.

“Stop, crying, it’s not very becoming for a boy,” said Rose.

“You, you’re alive!” cheered Sam.

Then Rose spread her wings flew around the room, and then out the window.

“I’m sorry I didn’t believe you Sam.”

“Its okay mommy, do you think I’ll ever see Rose again?”

“I don’t know.”

So hear I am twenty years later, old, and with a family of my own now. And here I sit writing about Rose and our adventures together.

“I wonder if it was all a dream.”

“Sam,” said a hushed voice.

“I think I’m working to hard.”

“Sam.”

So Sam looked around the room and found a little fairy perched on his inkwell staring at him.

“Rose!”

“Oh Sam you forgot me didn’t you? Your mom never forgot me after that day, yet you did.”

“I know, I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay. I’d like to show you something. Would you come with me?”

“Sure.”

So rose took him outside the house and led him towards the woods. And deep within the Laflorean woods there is a tiny kingdom, a kingdom of fairies. Sam looked at Rose and her at him, then they gave each other a huge hugged and told each other that they lover each other and that they would be in each others hearts forever.

The story was cute, but I think it needed a bit more conflict. Maybe a monster or something of that sort. It also moved too quickly for one to really feel sadness for the fairy's (potential) death. However, I think you have talent. As others have said, PROOF READ. Spell check on MS Word is also quite helpful.
